Menominee Lake
Menominee Lake
is one of the many small or medium sized lakes in Muskoka. The
Lake has a surface area of 240.81 acres (97.2 ha). Its maximum
depth is 24.93 ft (7.6 m.) while the mean depth is 10.5
ft (3.2 m.) There are no islands
in the Lake. It is roughly a horseshoe shape with two principal
bays or arms. Most of the Lake is located in McLean Ward
of the Township of Lake of Bays but a portion at the north end
is in Brunel Ward of the Town of Huntsville.
Menominee is part of
the Muskoka River Watershed, draining via Menominee Creek into
Lake of Bays and hence down the South Branch of the Muskoka River. At
times of high water it can also drain into Lake of Bays via
an unnamed creek flowing south and east from the end of the
southern arm of the Lake. Drainage from the Lake is uncontrolled
except periodically by beaver dams. Up stream there are
approximately seven small lakes and ponds the principal of
which is Dunn Lake; these drain into Menominee Lake through
a large wetland area. The area of the watershed draining
into Menominee Lake is 6.47 sq. km.
The terrain around the
Lake is generally hilly except for the large wetland area to
the west in the direction of Dunn Lake. Most of the area surrounding
the Lake is heavily wooded. There are no large cleared areas. There
is a substantial area of undeveloped land at the southwestern
end of the Lake. Part of this is privately held and is
mostly wetland; the balance is Crown land. This area
could be viewed as a special landscape feature or natural area
meriting some protection.
